Spooktacular Sorrento Valley Neighborhood Party
On Halloween afternoon, under slightly hazy skies (i.e., a respite from the recent heat wave) the first ever Sorrento Valley Neighborhood Spooktacular was presented by the Sorrento Valley Town Council. The arts and crafts pizza party, held at the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve entrance off of Sorrento Valley Blvd., provided Halloween-themed family entertainment.
Under a spider-webbed wooden gazebo in the mulch-padded picnic area just outside the canyon trail entrance, up to 50 neighborhood adults and children enjoyed the festivities, which included free arts, crafts and games for children, as well as a face painter, a photo booth, and a mad scientist with real spiders. Pizza from New York Giant was available for a small donation.
The craft tables offered several options: kids could choose to make their own spider lollipops or paper owls, decorate and personalize trick or treat bags or cupcakes, or decorate mini pumpkins.
Preparation for the party began days in advance, with members of the SVTC clearing the site of dead weeds and trash. The party began at 4:30 pm and ended a little after 6 pm, just as the sun was setting.
The event was publicized through Nextdoor Sorrento Valley email notifications and the SVTC’s own newsletter. SVTC President Julia Schriber remarked, “Even though we decided to do this kind of last-minute, it really turned out well!” Turnout was better than expected, and there were no shortages of materials or take-home goody bags filled with novelty items.
Event sponsors included stellar local Sorrento Valley businesses such as Tee Party, Sorrento Valley Children’s Center, the Ruhl Team, Royal Dance Academy, Kinderhouse Montessori School and Ms. Holly Mullen, DVM, DACVS, Veterinary Specialist.
